Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system could be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies may notice increased symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it could be time to start researching a new system.
